The robust Prado stakes a legitimate claim as one of the better 4WD models in Australia by being a consummate all-rounder and giving good value for money to an owner.
Available in either a 4.0 litre petrol V6 or a 3.0 litre four cylinder turbo intercooled diesel, the Toyota Prado has a strong performance and is light on fuel consumption. Combined with its impressive 180-litre fuel tank, the Prado is one of the more desirable 4WD models on the market.
Toyota has built a rock-solid range of 4WDs such as the RAV4, Hilux and LandCruiser, but the Prado provides a good overall performance on both the rough and the steep. The Toyota Prado includes special off-road features such as a centre differential lock, low-range transfer case and a constant 4WD system.
The Toyota Prado also features coil spring suspension to give occupants a comfortable ride and challenge its nemesis, the Mitsubishi Pajero. Value for money offered by a Toyota Prado is reasonable, with the standard fitment including eight seats, a user-friendly cabin layout and the bonus of Toyota’s reputation for well-built vehicles. Overall, it has its place alongside the Pajero but lucks out because its cost of depreciation is high.
