If it’s choice you’re after, then Holden certainly offers it with the versatile Astra. Not only does this European-built and designed small-to-medium sized car come as a five-door, coupe, wagon and convertible, there’s also the Korean-made Viva and Epica if you’re in need of more options.
The base model Holden Astra CD is good value for $21,990 as it offers a number of good features such as stability control as a standard. Braking and handling are good, and running and repair costs won’t cost the earth. The 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine is quite small, but it is a solid performer compared to the likes of the Mazda 3 or Ford Focus.
The Astra also comes in a more expensive, diesel-taking variant that suits those after more torque and accelerative ability. The overall style of the Holden Astra is solid quality, nice design and an impressive four-star safety rating. And or those concerned about the environment, the Astra is also relatively enviro-friendly.
The Holden Astra’s shortcomings are few, including impractically labelled air-conditioning controls. The automatic transmission model also lacks the smoothness and surety of the manual version, but is otherwise a decent ride.
